The Fernie 3 wrapped up yesterday with stage 3 bringing excitement and also some confusion for many riders.
The course started off at Fernie Alpine Resort with a long climb on the ski hill double track, leading into the most technical riding seen over the 3 days with a tough decent down Verboten. Some riders were caught on the steep roots and tight corners but those that made it down cleanly put crucial minutes on competitors.
Trials then led riders up into the Cedar Valley towards Island Lake Lodge, crossing Lizard Creek and back down into Mt Fernie Provincial Park for some more elevation gain.
Unfortunately some riders managed to miss important turns in this part of the course, making it confusing for the leading pack when they started passing riders previously behind them.
Those who stayed on course got to enjoy some more of the Provincial Park singletrack network, using every last ounce of energy to drag themselves back up to Fernie Alpine Resort and towards the finish.
Again there was some confusion as to the exact course on the final ski hill decent with many riders taking different downhill trails to cross the finishing line.
Although this confusion meant that the day 3 results had to be scrapped and official standings given for the overall results after the end of stage two, riders still got to enjoy some quality Fernie riding in the sun!
The Fernie 3 race directors issued an official apology to riders, recognising there were some issues with course markings and vowing to take this as a learning experience to ensure that these issues don’t happen again!
Plans are already underway for next years race with a two day stage race set to happen on the same weekend in 2015.
Thanks must go to the organisers, volunteers and supporters for making the weekend a great experience and showcasing Fernie’s riding culture and trails.
