Planning a winter vacation can be daunting, especially when you want to fit it all in with a limited budget.
Fortunately, the ultimate Fernie vacation doesn’t have to break the bank. We’ve got insider tips on how to enjoy good eats, fun activities, and even some pampering and still have enough money for a souvenir!
Here's a baker's dozen free-or-cheap ideas for making the most of your Fernie getaway:
Snowshoeing & Cross-Country Skiing at Fernie Alpine Resort
Nordic Skiing and Snowshoeing are fun, family-friendly activities with great bang for your buck. At Fernie Alpine Resort the groomed trail network is free to use, and if you need to rent gear it will only set you back $24 for a full day or $22 for a half-day. The Elk Valley Nordic Centre and the Fernie Golf and Country Club have a wider range of trails that are groomed daily and day passes are just $10.
Complimentary Guided Tours at Fernie Alpine Resort
If you’re new to Fernie Alpine Resort or haven’t visited in a while, take advantage of a complimentary mountain tour. Available twice daily at 10:30am and 1:30pm, tours last approx 1.5 hours. Knowledgeable guides will take you to all the best spots on either the upper or lower slopes. It’s a fun way to get a feel for the mountain; local knowledge of the best powder stashes is worth its weight in gold!
Skating at Memorial Arena
Skating is a classic winter pastime. Bring your own skates (or rent them for a nominal fee) and enjoy free ice time on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30-11:15am at the Fernie Memorial Arena. Parents and Tots skate free at the same time slot on Wednesdays. As long as the weather allows, there is also a free outdoor skating rink at the Fernie Courthouse - perfect for a night-time skate after dinner.
Going to a Hockey Game
Make sure you plan to take in some local hockey action while you’re in Fernie with a Ghostriders home game. Make an evening of it — hit up the Pub first to take advantage of the burger and regular-season game ticket deal for just $20, or stop by the Kodiak Lounge for a pre-game beer and regular-season ticket for only $12.50. (Also available for playoff games at increased prices).
Fondue with Friends
Fondue is a delicious addition to any winter getaway; rent a fondue set at Le Grand Fromage for just $10. Knowledgeable in-store cheesemongers will help you pick out perfect cheeses for your tasty evening in.
Micro-Brewery Beer Tasting
Try amazing local beer at Fernie Brewing Company. “Cheers to Charity” sample paddles are just five bucks. Pick four brews to sample and help out a local charity at the same time — win-win!
Take advantage of daily specials and happy hour offerings. The Rusty Edge in the resort village offers beer specials and a $5 menu from 4pm-6pm every day, or sample a $6 margarita any night from 9-10pm at Nevados. The Loaf offers a basket of house smoked wings and a Fernie Brewing Co. beer for just $10 on Mondays and the Northern has free-to-play Bingo with great prizes, plus $10 burger & beer and DJ after-party on Tuesdays. For more great deals check out our Local Specials.
Hip Spot with Cool Specials
Almost every night of the week, Infinitea T-bar has unique deals to enhance your Fernie vacation. The unbeatable offerings include free movie screenings & popcorn on Mondays, live music on Fridays and roast dinner on Sunday for just $10. Check out Beautea night on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month where $10 will get you a manicure, facial, or even a massage.
Soak & Sauna $15 at Spa 901
For pampering on any other day of the week, treat yourself to a relaxing afternoon at Spa 901. If you're not flush enough for a full treatment, a soak in the outdoor hot pools or a sweat in the infrared saunas is the perfect alternative. Access to the spacious relaxation rooms is included; enjoy it all for just $15.
Explore Fernie's Great History
Learn about the history of Fernie and the surrounding areas at the Fernie Museum. Children under 17 are free and adult admission is only $5. For a completely free alternative, check out the miners’ walk at City Hall or embark on a self-guided Historical Walking Tour.
For a little town, Fernie has a big Aquatic Centre! Stop by after a big day adventuring and take advantage of the hot tub with epic views to soothe aching muscles. An adult pass is just $6.25, or for $14.50, take the whole family and enjoy the eight-lane pool, kid’s pool, giant hot-pool, steam room, and of course, the water slide. There's also a fitness room for a small additional charge.
Try Fatbiking (that's biking on snow!)
Fatbiking is the latest craze to hit Fernie and it makes all kinds of sense why. Bikes are cheap to rent from local shops like Gear Hub and Guides Hut and there is no steep learning curve - once you hop on it’s exactly like riding a bike! From there, it’s a quick pedal to Montane where there are groomed trails for all ability levels. Better yet, the trails are free, and so are the million dollar views!
Cheap Movie Night
Pleasant Tuesdays are the Vogue Theatre's discount days. All regular and 3-D movies are $3.50 off admission, and concessions won't break the bank either!
