At an Italian table, food and bread are inseparable. People start a meal by nibbling on fresh bread, they use it to wipe a pasta plate clean of a tasty sauce, mop up the juices of a meat dish or soak up a delicious salad dressing.
The Dinner Menu at Loaf is a marriage of what Loaf loves best – real, honest, freshly-made, Italian-inspired food. Loaf's Italian-style pizza dough is handmade and topped with fresh cheese, vegetables and meat – no wonder Loaf’s pizza was voted Fernie’s best pizza in the Best of Fernie awards. Like all Loaf’s products, the pizza dough only contains the core ingredients of flour, water, salt, yeast and olive oil – definitely no artificial preservatives or additives. Pizza dough is nut and dairy free and pizzas can be prepared to suit many diets and allergy restrictions.
About Loaf Bakery
Originally we started out with an idea for a great little bakery – we wanted to make a range of artisan breads and pastries from scratch, by hand, using all natural ingredients. Everything we do at Loaf is shaped by this idea. We prepare real, honest food, fresh every day.
After visiting Fernie in 2003 from London, England, Phil & Claire Gadd fell in love with the area and looked for ways to reside in Fernie permanently. As an avid snowboarder and mountain biker with a young family, Phil knew that Fernie was the perfect location to start a business and also enjoy the sports and activities that the area had to offer.
With no town bakery and a community interested in healthy lifestyle choices, Phil saw the obvious gap and felt that his ‘all natural’ products would be a good fit for Fernie so they did their research and found that there was great potential for a wholesale and retail bakery/cafe with a clear focus on competitive prices, artisan quality, freshly made, preservative & additive free products.
In the summer of 2009, after their paperwork came through, Phil & Claire arrived in Fernie and hit the ground running to get the bakery open in time for the winter season. In less than three months they fitted out the premises, sourced equipment, got their core team together, got all the paperwork and licenses in place and opened the doors.
Loaf Bakery had an incredible, hectic first year of business. Loaf was voted Fernie’s ‘New Business of the Year’ in 2010 by the Chamber of Commerce but their greatest achievement for the year was the arrival of their first Canadian baby born in July.
In fall 2016, Phil and Claire closed shop for a short period to reinvent The Loaf. Be sure to check out The Loaf on your next visit!
“Fernie is a fantastic community – a town with a big heart and soul that has made us warmly welcome as both a business and a family.”
