Unfortunately, this event has had to be cancelled.
Due to excessive snowfall creating hazardous conditions on portions of the backcountry race course, along with challenging driving conditions on Hwy #3, the difficult decision to cancel this event was made late on Friday, February 10th. The Kootenay Cup on Saturday has also been cancelled, due to challenging driving conditions on Hwy #3. For those already in Fernie, the Fernie Nordic Society invites you to join them for two fun events on Saturday, February 11th:
Get your cross-country skis and snowshoes or fat-bike ready for this winter event open to anyone as a solo or team event.
Family friendly and fun for all, this event can be competitive or recreational - chose your pace and enjoy the atmosphere! The 4th Annual Winter Wheezer returns to the trails this year on the Fernie Provincial Park and the beautiful Elk Valley Nordic Centre.
The 4th Annual Fernie Winter Wheezer promises a great day of fun on the Fernie trails. REGISTRATION is now open.
THE RUN – The 5km trail run is the compulsory element in your Duathlon, and is the first leg. A fun trail run through the Provincial Park trails, starting and ending at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre. Snowshoes are optional, but usually not required due to the packed down trails – although somewhat snowfall dependent!
New this year! To you help your run, the kind folk of Icebug Canada will be coming to the race with their fleet of demo shoes. On a first come, first served base, you can borrow shoes to race in. With the option to purchase your own too.
OPTION #1: THE SKI – After your run, choose from a ~10km Skate or Classic loop of the Elk Valley Nordic Centre.
OPTION #2: THE FAT BIKE – Or instead, opt for a 5km fat bike, up Stove and down Dem Bones.
CATEGORIES: Solo or Team. Male, Female or Mixed. 12+ Categories too.
Children aged 10+ are welcome to join any of the standard races, there are no child-specific routes.
PRICE: $35 per person for adults, $25 per person for kids.
Entry costs include grooming fees and racer giveaway. And if you enter the Teck Kootenay Cup and Winter Wheezer, save $5 at registration!
A call will be made in the days leading up to the event as to whether Snowshoes are compulsory or not. Conditions are varied each year and often a good trail shoe would be a much preferable option to many.
Hosted by Fernie Tears and Gears and the Fernie Nordic Society.
