Last-Minute Holiday Shopping
Downtown Fernie has something for everyone. This time of year Second Ave., Fernie's downtown core, is lined with trees draped in white Christmas lights. Store window displays glow warm and sparkle late into the night. There are fashion boutiques, custom jewellery stores and pop-up art shops, hidden gift shops with custom Fernie flasks and lumberjack candles, and that specialty shop for the eclectic shopper.
With just a few short days before Christmas is upon us, walk the glittering streets in search of that special gift for that special someone—you might even find something lovely for yourself. Here are a few great places to wander into during these last days of holiday shopping.
The best gift is the one you wear; a velvet jumpsuit, black pleather tights, the perfect cream-coloured blouse with smooth-to-the-touch denim jeans. Freyja Lifestyle Fashion (602 2nd Ave.) has everything you could ever ask for when it comes to style. This classy and trendy boutique blends latest fashion with old staples, and owner Chantel and her staff are always there to help. Beautiful scarves and comfy knitted sweaters make for perfect gifts under the tree when it's storming outside.
No. 3 Boutique & Salon (522 2nd Ave.) is another great option where modern fashion meets trendy home decor. Peruse the racks and find a signature party dress or the perfect stocking stuffer in their unique-to-Fernie sassy wine glasses and coffee mugs.
If you're looking for versatile outdoor wear for those long snowy days on the slopes, and nights on the cross-country ski trails, try Elevation Showcase (598 2nd Ave.) for classic winter plaid or new Kavu fleece. If you're one of many waiting in anticipation of next summer, you won't be left in the cold—Elevation carries iconic Eagle Nest Outfitters hammocks, perfect for next summer's hiking and camping trips. Or check The Guides Hut (671 2nd Ave.) for diverse outerwear from Arc'teryx and Patagonia. Nearly every layer you need to keep warm, stay dry and feel good exists in this quaint location. You can also rent fat bikes here, or look to Gear Hub (401 1st Ave.) for all your rental needs. Cross-country skis, avalanche gear, downhill skis, poles and snowshoes, are all available for those who hit the snowy trails over the holidays.
If you want to bring a piece of Fernie home with you, Fernie's own Giv'r Shirt Works (672A 2nd Ave.) makes custom-designed tees, hoodies and Fernie-branded clothes, including comfortable plaid pyjamas and the perfect Fernie toque.
Perhaps you're an eclectic gift-giver, looking for that one-of-a-kind piece to surprise your most suspicious of loved-ones. Fernie's no stranger to talent, and local artists and creators are guaranteed to give you what you need. The Fernie Arts Co-op (572 2nd Ave.) is packed with the work of dozens of local artists and artisans including fine art prints and originals, hand-crafted lamps, jewellery, soaps and natural household products, stained glass and sculpture. Don’t miss Coal Town Goods, tucked away next to Fernie Stationers on 6th St. just steps from 2nd Ave. This tiny boutique is packed with local jewellery, fair trade scarves and a range of unique Fernie-branded giftware. At the Fernie Museum Shop (491 2nd Ave.) a range of unique Korite jewellery and mining memorabilia is offered along with a selection of books on local history, beautiful scarves, local produce and a range of heritage and period-inspired gifts.
For something that shimmers, try Fernie's newest jewellery shop in town, Element 7 Nine (592 3rd Ave.) for handcrafted gold and silver earrings, necklaces, and other custom pieces. Owner Matt Martin works in his crisp Scandinavian-style boutique with fine tools in-hand to create unique pieces to treasure.
Lastly, the greenest of thumbs even garden in the winter. The Green Petal (421 2nd Ave.) not only provides fresh-cut flowers and beautiful seasonal centrepieces, they also have a fabulous array of accessories for the tea-drinker and succulent-planter in us all. Local pottery and kitchenware, eclectic books and candles, and other fine gifts are just a few of the many heart-pleasing things you'll find here. Or try the Healing Hollow (571 2nd Ave.) Fernie's locally made Essential Oils company, for the best in organic oils and related products. This small shop has a large selection of essential oil diffusers and fabulous stocking stuffers, including their seasonal blends like Candy Cane, and local homemade lavender bath bombs from Soco Soaps.
Take the stress out of last-minute shopping and find the perfect gift in Historic Downtown Fernie. Grab a coffee and walk the snow-dusted streets in search of beautiful items for everyone on your list—you might even find something for yourself.
