Public advisory: Ridgemont Trails to be closed briefly for debris removal

Monday • November 16, 2020

November 16, 2020

FERNIE, B.C. --- Parastone Developments Ltd. has announced that the Ridgemont Trails will be temporarily closed for safety reasons due to the burning of debris piles. Work will start sometime during the week of November 16th and continue over the next few weeks until it is completed.

Parastone Developments Ltd. manages the lands on behalf of the landowner, Ridgemont Holdings Ltd. The pile burning is being carried out to clear away the branches and other wood debris that was left over from the city-approved logging and road-building activities that took place in 2018 and 2019. The removal of the debris will reduce the build-up of dead wood and combustible vegetation on the forest floor and help prevent the spread of wildfires. The pile burning has been approved by the BC Wildfire Service and will follow Ministry of Environment guidelines.

Warning signs will be posted and Parastone is urging all trail users and the public to follow the instructions on the signage, use caution while in the area, and avoid that section of the Ridgemont Lands while burning is taking place. Crews and equipment will be on-site and actively working in the area to manage the pile burning effectively. The exact timing of the removal will depend on the weather, venting conditions, and snowfall. The burns will only take place if the weather is suitable and venting conditions are favourable. The debris pile burning is scheduled for the following areas:

The lower Ridgemont lands, which are accessed by the Derby Grounds gate. The following trails will be impacted by full or partial closures:

  • Town Loop
  • Old Stumpy
  • CDT (TGT)
  • Oh Dear
  • Deadfall Downhill
  • Faceshots (already closed)

The upper Ridgemont lands, impacting the following trails with full or partial closures:

  • R-Trail
  • Kid’s Stuff
  • Upper Kid’s Stuff
  • Eric’s Trail
  • Roxy Roller
  • Ridgemont Road
  • Upper access to Space Unicorn

A notice about the temporary closure of the Ridgemont trails has been posted to the Trailforks website and circulated to the Fernie Trails Alliance, the Fernie Nordic Society, the Fernie Mountain Bike Club, the City of Fernie, the Fernie Chamber of Commerce, and Tourism Fernie

Further details on specific closures will be released once a schedule has been confirmed.
