Hockey Night In Fernie

Hockey season is underway!

If you're not from Canada, you might not be aware of how much love the sport of Ice Hockey receives, and if you are, then you'll know all about it! Hockey is a way of life for many Canadian towns, and Fernie is no exception. From summer training camps to the excitement of the playoffs in February and March, (and dare we hope—a spring championship series?) the hockey season engages locals, visitors, and seasonaires alike.

About the Ghostriders

The Fernie Ghostriders —named for the iconic Ghostrider shadow that appears strongest on the face of Mt Proctor at the start of the season each year—play on home ice to an enthusiastic crowd up to 2000 strong at the Fernie Memorial Arena in the centre of town. Watch for special games including the Teddy Bear Toss, Puck shoot, and Diamond Ring games.

The 'Riders, as they are affectionately known, are a Junior B team, playing in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay Conference of the KIJHL - the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. Winning teams go on to the playoffs for the Cyclone Taylor Cup against other provincial championship teams, and then the Keystone Cup, the Western Canadian Championship.

The Ghostriders last won the KIJHL in 2007 & 2008, taking the bronze medal at the Cyclone Taylor Cup in 2008. They hosted the Cup championship in 2011, taking the silver medal. Their biggest rivals are the Kimberley Dynamiters, don't miss a Riders V Blasters game!

Game Essentials

  • Puck drop for home games is usually 7:30pm - get in early to bag a good seat near the ice.
  • Don't forget extra cash for the 50/50 raffle, concessions, beer, and souvenir merchandise—don't leave Fernie without a Ghostrider Jersey or puck.
  • Matches are 3 periods of 20 minutes, so you get two breaks to grab a beer! Overtime play can make the game considerably longer.

Grab a deal and a game ticket!

Make a night of it with a great deal at The Pub Bar & Grill located at Park Place Lodge. Conveniently located just a two-minute stroll down the road to the rink, The Pub has a relaxed, fun atmosphere and plenty of sports memorabilia to set the tone for the evening. Enjoy a local Fernie Brewing Company beer over a game of pool. For just $21 you can fill up on a mouthwatering feature burger with a game ticket, or purchase tickets for half price ($5.50) with any food purchase of $10 or more.

Just one block from the Arena, the Kodiak Lounge is a great place to whet your whistle pre-game. A pint with a game ticket is just $13. The atmosphere is always great at Fernie's most international bar, in the Raging Elk Hostel.
