A short bike ride or drive from downtown brings you to the Montane Community Farm, located in the historic Montane Barn.
Operating Daily, drop-ins welcome: Access to the Montane Trails remains available via the trailhead on Montane Parkway.
The public is welcome to walk around the historic barn, which was originally the home of the pit ponies that worked at the Coal Creek Mines. The Montane Barn hosts the Fernie Therapeutic Horse and Pony Club which is a volunteer run program striving to nurture the psychological and physical well-being through the relationship and love of horses. There are two chicken coops on site accommodating approximately 60 laying chickens. The eggs are sold to the residents in the Montane neighborhood with the proceeds going back into the farm. Presently, you the brood includes Golden Comets, Rockettes and Caramel Queens.
Most recently a ‘trip’ of mini–Myotonic Fainting goats have joined the farm and are enjoying their new winter shelter and fenced in paddock. Say hello to Shyla & Lolo (white does) and Zora and Batman (brown wethers).
