This exhibition showcases 21 watercolours by Slavka Kolesar, from the illustrated book for children La Légende de Carcajou (The Legend of the Wolverine) by Renee Robitaille, published in 2017 through Planète Rebelle.
This traditional Dene First Nations tale celebrates the relationships that unite us, with narrative elements honouring mutual aid, courage and inclusivity. Renee Robitaille is a storyteller from QC, who retells this legend in her own words with humour and wisdom, and with the blessing of the Dene Nation, in a way that speaks to children and adults alike.
La Légende de Carcajou was a finalist for the 2017 Governor General’s Literary Award in the French children’s illustrated book category.
Slavka Kolesar is a Canadian visual artist drawn to storytelling and the artisanal process where the human hand is involved in each iteration of the creation of a work. She lives and works in Jaffray, around 50km from Fernie, within the traditional Ktunaxa First Nation territory.
