Soma means “the body.” Somatic meditation is an approach that begins with the body rather than the mind. Instead of trying to clear your thoughts or concentrate on a particular mental image, we start by noticing what is happening inside the body—our breath, sensations, movement, tension, comfort and connection to the ground beneath us.
Somatic meditation is often described as “bottom-up” because we use information from the body to help settle and regulate the nervous system, gradually bringing greater awareness to our thoughts, emotions and overall sense of self.
Many traditional meditation practices take a more “top-down” approach, using focused attention, visualisation, mental anchors or cognitive techniques. These can be wonderful tools, but for some people—particularly those who are new to meditation—they can feel abstract or difficult to access.
Somatic meditation offers another way in.
You don't need to empty your mind. You don't need to be good at meditation. You simply need to become curious about what you can feel.
We may use breath, body scanning, grounding, gentle movement and awareness of sensation to help you reconnect with your body and become more present in the moment.
