Fernie Nordic Society

A local non-profit organization managing two cross-country ski areas in Fernie and hosting coaching, lessons, and events.

The FNS facilitates professional grooming and maintenance of over 18 kilometres of nordic-only trails for skating and classic skiing in two areas at Elk Valley Nordic Centre & Fernie Golf Course. Dogs, fat bikes, and walking/snowshoeing are not allowed on FNS groomed trails.

About the Trail Areas

The Elk Valley Nordic Centre is the home of the Fernie Nordic Society and the location of the warming hut, lessons, and most events. 

Most of the trails at the EVNC are suited to intermediate level skiers, with a bunny rabbit loop for beginners. Beginner skiers will enjoy the trails at the Fernie Golf Course, which have little gradient and enjoy beautiful mountain views. Trails at the EVNC & Golf course are groomed for classic and skate skiing. 

More trails can be found in three additional areas at Fernie Alpine Resort, Montane, and on the Fernie Dyke along the Elk River. Dogs, Fat bikes, and walking/snowshoeing are welcome at these areas. (Some Montane trails are XC only). 

Lessons, Coaching & Camps for Kids

Fernie Nordic Society offers and facilitates a range of cross-country skiing programs and clinics for all ages, including the Skill Development Program, Youth Race Team, Coaching Sessions for Adults and more.

Developed by Nordiq Canada, various programs are offered for kids of all ages, with regular sessions throughout the year and special events and races for extra motivation. 

Gear Rentals are available at a number of locations in Fernie.

Trail Passes

A trail pass is required to ski at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre and the Fernie Golf Course. Day-use passes are available online and can also be purchased at trail-head kiosks.

If you plan to ski more than 5 days, consider purchasing a membership. Seasonal memberships are also valid for Sparwood and Elkford Nordic Trails.
