Chasing Golden Giants

Top Spots to See Larches in Fernie This Fall

In October, Fernie’s landscape transforms into a breathtaking palette of warm hues. One of the most remarkable sights is the changing colour of the larches - those stunning deciduous conifers that turn a brilliant golden yellow before shedding their needles. If you're wondering where you can witness this magical transition in Fernie, BC, here are the top spots to check out.

Mt Fernie Provincial Park

Mount Fernie Provincial Park is a great location for larch viewing. The park’s trails weave through lush forests with scattered larches, offering peaceful, easy hike options with the reward of spectacular fall scenery. The park’s proximity to town makes it a convenient option for those looking to catch a quick glimpse of the autumn transformation.

Castle Rock / Montane Trails

If you're up for a longer hike, head out to the Montane multi-use trails leading up to Castle Rock - larch sightings guaranteed! :-) We recommend reserving at least half a day, especially if you plan on reaching Castle Rock.

The Views From The Elk River

Luckily for all of us, there’s no shortage of breathtaking larch views right from the valley bottom—even from town, if you take a moment to look up.

Take a leisurely walk along the Elk River for more opportunities to admire the stunning larches. The gentle sound of flowing water creates a serene atmosphere as you stroll, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Well, there you have it. :-) Whether you're hiking through the backcountry or enjoying a leisurely drive, Fernie offers numerous opportunities to witness the magical transition of the larches. Be sure to bring your camera and take in the golden hues before the needles fall and winter takes over this beautiful mountain town.
