Winter Activities in Fernie for non skiers

Winter in the Canadian Rockies can be an unforgettable experience, even for the non-skier or non-snowboarder. We've selected our best outdoor activities to get you and your family out in the mountains without the need to ride a chairlift.

It feels like the bikes never get completely put away in Fernie. Even as winter arrives and the trails are covered with snow, people will always find a way to get out rolling on two wheels.

If you can ride a bike, you can definitely ride a fat bike. You'll cover more ground and reach more spots rolling rather than on foot, plus you'll have the thrilling reward of decending old familiar favourite trails from the summer months.

Explore the winter wonderland trails around Fernie Alpine Resort. Just pick up the trail map and you'll see how extenstive the snowshoe trail network is. You can find short family-friendly hikes in the forests, to longer whole-day hikes to viewpoints of the valley. All you need is a pair of snowshoes to get you on your way.

Anybody can give Curling ago! Fernie Curling Club has its four lanes and cash bar open to non-members every Thursday for drop in sessions. Absolutely no experience required.

Ok, so technically we're skiing here, but cross-country skiing (a.k.a. nordic skiing) is a lot more easier to pick up and more accessible than its downhill cousin (alpine skiing). Fernie Golf Course has the most beginner-friendly trails, and best mountain views to get out and experience this outdoor activity.

It's hard to fathom that there are trout lurking under all that thick ice. Wrap up warm, build a fire and spend some downtime with friends and family outside.

Fernie Wilderness Adventures offer guided tours via advance booking to help your day go smoothly and get you out there safely. Give them a call for more details.

An absolute classic way to spend time outdoors in Canada. Ice skating, outdoors, with fresh air and mountain views.

Find Fernie's Outdoor Skate Rink at Fernie Aquatics Centre. It's completely free to use pending weather conditions. If you've forgotten your skates, never fear. Gearhub Sports stock rental skates so you can get out on the ice on a moments notice.

We're always excited to see how you spend your time adventuring in our mountain town. Share your Fernie experience with #Ferniestoke.
