Over 100 people attended the Tourism Fernie's industry event on April 3, 2025. 

Held annually, the Tourism in Fernie event brings together local and area business leaders, government officials and non-profit organizations that are involved in the local tourism sector.  The event focuses on providing updates on Tourism Fernie's past year of activities and results, plans for 2025, its official annual general meeting, hosting an industry keynote guest speaker to support learning and strategic planning, and also networking opportunities.

The official event was hosted at Bay Leaf Indian Fusion Restaurant with a social function later in the day at the Fernie Legion. The event began with an official welcome and opening remarks from Mayor Nic Milligan, Tourism Fernie Chair Reto Barrington and Jikke Gyorki, EO of Tourism Fernie. This was followed by presentations from the Tourism Fernie Management Team.

During the complimentary buffet lunch keynote speaker Greg Klassen, Senior Director, Skift Advisory. - "Today's World & Achieving Your Unique Competitive Advantage."  His presentation was recorded and can be viewed on Youtube.

Following lunch and the keynote address, the official AGM was called to order.

Business was conducted swiftly by Reto Barrington, Chair of Tourism Fernie, and Mark Ormandy, Treasurer, who presented the financial statements.

Graeme Nunn of Rockies Law, as the Electoral Officer, explained the board seat nomination and process, noting that an election had not been required this year as the organisation had received the same number of nominations as available seats.

Following the AGM, Jikke made a acknowledgement of the many people, businesses and organisations that contribute to the success of the Tourism Industry in Fernie, recognizing in particular the contributions of The Elk River Alliance, The Arts Station, Fernie Museum, Fernie Nordic Society, Fernie Snowmobile Association, Fernie Trails Alliance, Coal Creek Heritage Society and many others.

Jikke made a presentation of a commorative plaque to Blair Craig and Lynn Muller of Canyon Raft Company in recognition of their 30 years in business, and all their contributions to the tourism sector and community. New owner of Canyon Raft Company (and former employee) Adam Howie was introduced and welcomed.

Jeremiah Pauw of Peacock Hospitality and the Fernie Fox Hotel was then invited to present an exciting new development at his hotel property, which will include the addition of accessible lodging units with kitchens, conference room facility, spa, cocktail lounge, and covered parking.

Reto returned to the floor to recognize ED Wendy McDougall, Fernie Chamber of Commerce, & Councillor Tracey Audia Kelly, City of Fernie – Tourism Fernie board liasons.

Staff followed this with a presentation to Jikke Gyorki, EO of Tourism Fernie, in recognition of 15 years with Tourism Fernie, and her recent nomination for Tourism Woman of the Year, and DMO Professional Excellence Award win at the TIABC Tourism Industry Awards. The trophy for the win - a traditional handpainted drum - was on display during the event. 

After the formal event a casual and free social event at the Fernie Legion was held with complimentary appies and a drink.
Catering was generously donated by Sushiwood Restaurant and purchased from The Chopstick Truck and local grocery stores. Door prizes were also handed out at this event, (details as above). 

Brief industry updates were provided by Stag Leap Running, Fernie Nordic Society, Elk Valley Dolphins Swim Club and Elk River Alliance.
