When fall meets an early dusting of winter

Updated: March 2025

The first snowfall in Fernie is always a thrill, sparking that undeniable excitement for winter in our outdoor community. Nestled in the Kootenay Rockies, Fernie is no stranger to early snowfall, with the region's mountain climate often bringing surprise snowfalls before winter fully sets in. In fact, it's not unusual to see a dusting in September or October.

Take October 3rd, 2018, for example - Fernie locals awoke to 20-30cm of snow blanketing the town and resort. It served as a gentle reminder that winter would be just around the corner and offered a stunning view of fresh snow atop the golden fall colours.

It's definitely a day to switch ballcaps for toques as around 20cms fell on Downtown 2nd Avenue.
