In October, Tourism Fernie conducted a 'Summer Business Tourism Survey'.
The purpose of the survey was to ask local businesses how business was during the summer season - June to September and seek feedback (benefits, challenges and suggestions) on the presence of TC Energy pipeline workers.
The survey was conducted using the online platform Survey Monkey and sent to Tourism Fernie's membership database by email. The Fernie Chamber of Commerce also shared the survey to its database through their e-newsletter in October. The survey was live for 2 weeks and received 42 responses. Of those 42 responses, 13 were accommodators, 12 were dining/cafes, 6 retail shops, 7 activity operators/attractions/events, and 4 service providers.
TC Energy pipeline project and workers are in the Fernie area for 3 years (June-October) with a bulk of their workers the first and second year numbering up to 500. Many are housed in local commercial accommodations and short-term rentals in the Fernie area (some are in Sparwood and Cranbrook area). The project workers are filling approximately 25% of the local accommodation inventory.
