Just a few years old, the Elk Valley Nordic Centre offers over 9km of groomed trails and a new warming hut, with terrain expanding every year.
An easy 5-minute drive west on Hwy 3 from Fernie, the beautiful Elk Valley Nordic Centre is located next to Mount Fernie Provincial Park. Here you will access rolling trails nestled into the valley below the Lizard Range and world-famous Fernie Alpine Resort.
The trails were professionally designed and are groomed regularly for skate and classic skiing. Trailhead facilities include a warming hut to wiggle and warm your toes, maps and information about the trail system, and when on duty, a knowledgeable trail ambassador to chat with about all things Nordic.
The main parking is located in the overflow parking lot at Mount Fernie Provincial Park, where an information kiosk and porta-potty are available.
Trails are for intermediates and above, with some short steep sections and rolling downhills. A new bridge and connector trail to Fernie Alpine Resort was added in late 2014 and there is now an official trailhead sign and access next to Alpine Lodge at the ski resort village area.
There is a box for trail use fees and membership registrations at both trailheads:
Day-use fee: $10, or $20 for families. Includes insurance.
Great value for multi-day visitors: Nordic Society season pass.
Fernie has 5 distinctly different areas of groomed trails for Nordic skiing.
For full information on lessons and classes check out the Fernie Nordic Society website.
XC skiing rentals and lessons are available at Fernie Alpine Resort on the 8km daily-groomed Silk & Manchuria multi-use trail system.
Equipment rentals are available in town from GearHub, 401 1 st Ave. Ph: 250-423-5555
