Van Colden: Shredding with the Littles
Show continues throughout January.
Fernie has a very special place in my heart. When I met my husband, we spent a lot of time in the Elk Valley. Although we lived in Calgary, we drove to Fernie often. We got married in Fernie, and as our family grew, we knew we wanted our kids to grow up enjoying and appreciating the outdoors in the same way we did. Like many other Calgarians, we drive to our happy place every weekend. We have been bringing our kids to Fernie for the past 12 years. Most winter weekends you will find us sliding around at the Fernie Alpine Resort, or taking advantage of the Montane trails, or climbing the extra-large snowbanks around town. Although we live in Calgary, many of our family memories are formed here, in Fernie.
Inspired by many days on the Fernie ski hill with the family, my paintings are depictions of the fleeting moments of a skiing family. As a firm supporter of active living, I believe that if we can get kids outside, the active side of things will work themselves out. As parents, we can provide a gateway for kids to nurture and respect their environment by simply getting them out and playing in it. Fernie provides the perfect backdrop for raising kids to be well aware of Mother Nature and all her wonders. - Van Colden
