Updated from Bizet's ancient Ceylon to an unspecified Asian locale during the modern times, this production of The Pearl Fishers brings a thin storyline together, supported by an all-star cast and the Met's trademark splendour. Nadir and Zurga, friends since childhood, renew their pledge to keep their distance from the Priestess Leila, whom they both love. Village politics, tsunami and fire ensue, and of course, one of the men gets the girl. Lovely choral parts for the fisher community, a famous baritone-tenor duet excellently sung by Polezani and Kwiecien, and Damrau's brilliant coloratura make this little-known opera a rare treat.
