La Fille du Régiment by Donizetti
Natalie Dessay as Marie
Juan Diego Flórez as Tonio
Royal Opera orchestra and chorus at Covent Garden, conducted by Bruno Campanella
directed by Laurent Pelly
Italian, with English subtitles
2007, 2:12
This is Donizetti at his musical best, and a showcase for tenors. In the aria "Ah! mes amis", Flórez performs flawlessly the breathtaking 9 high-Cs.
This comic opera, first staged in 1840 in Paris, is set for us in early 20th century Europe. It is a light-hearted, though highly unlikely, story of Marie, a baby orphaned on the battlefield and raised by soldiers, who grows up and falls in love with Tonio, a local boy. He joins the occupying regiment to be near her and the story unfolds with surprises for all...and a happy ending.
