Hiking & Walking Trails
Fernie has amazing trails for adventurers of all abilities. Find trails that meander through town, wind through ancient forests, & climb into the high alpine.
Trails for Every Pace & Every Season
Fernie is a hiker’s paradise, with trails that meander through town, wind through ancient forests, climb to sweeping alpine views, and allow you to step right out of downtown and into your next adventure. Explore Fernie-style by hiking or walking all corners of the valley surrounding the community. From easy strolls along the Elk River in town to big adventures through the high alpine, Fernie has amazing options for adventurers of all ability levels.
Many of our trails are also accessible in the winter for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking.
Safety When Hitting the Trail
It is important to always be prepared with proper hiking boots, water and snacks, and bear spray. Know what to expect for weather and dress accordingly. Temperatures are cooler the higher in elevation you go. Tell someone you know where you are going and when you plan to be back, in case you run into any issues. AdventureSmart has a great trip plan app for this exact purpose. Fernie is wildlife country, learn about being safe in the mountains, carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it (WildsafeBC). And please remember, if you pack it in, pack it out.
