April 5: Rinaldo - George Fredric Handel
Featuring: David Daniels, Deborah York, Axel Kohler, Noemi Nadelmann, David Walker
Conducted: Harry Bicket with the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra and Chorus (Munich)
Directed: David Alden, Brian Large
2001. Italian with English Subtitles.
2hrs 43mins

David Alden's production of Handel's Rinaldo brings the complex struggle between the Crusaders and the Saracens to vivid life, as he creates a surreal, out-of-proportion, pop-art world on stage. At times the satire verging on parody, at times absurdly funny, while always highlighting Handel's most gorgeous music paired with supreme vocal artistry.

Four countertenors, headed by the incomparable David Daniels, brings a different take to the proceedings. Deborah York's 'Lascia qu'io pianga' is peerless; so is the very sultry Noemi Nadelmann as the evil Armida. Harry Bicket, peerless in baroque repertoire, shines in the pit and on the harpsichord.
